Sclerotherapy (Vein Injections)

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the gold standard for the treatment of unsightly spider veins. This is a minimally invasive physician directed procedure to treat uncomplicated spider veins and uncomplicated reticular veins. The treatment involves the injection of a solution into the affected veins. Very fine needles are used to inject a solution directly into the veins to dissolve and eliminate them. The solution causes the walls of the vessels to thicken, eventually sealing off the blood flow to them. It usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes for a treatment and generally multiple treatments, six to eight weeks apart, are needed to see optimal results. There is no downtime with sclerotherapy vein removal; however, compression stockings may need to be worn for a period of time and avoidance of direct sun exposure is important to prevent staining of the skin overlying the treated areas. We use Asclera leg veins. Asclera® (polidocanol) Injection is a prescription medicine that is used in a procedure called sclerotherapy to remove unwanted veins on your legs. It is administered by a our physician to treat two types of veins:

  • Uncomplicated spider veins (very small varicose veins ≤ 1 mm in diameter)
